NEW YORK (PIX11) -- An individual who returned to the United States on Sunday from an Ebola-stricken West African nation has tested negative for Ebola, according to NYC health department officials.

The patient did not have contact with Ebola patients while in West Africa and was not showing symptoms upon return.

But due to the travel history and current symptoms on Tuesday,  the individual was isolated at HHC's Bellevue Hospital Center.

According to the statement:

"The individual has been blood tested and the results are negative for Ebola. An alternative diagnosis has been confirmed and the individual remains at Bellevue in critical condition."
