HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a driver with a suspended license was behind the wheel when a taxi hit and killed a man running across a Long Island road.

The Suffolk County Police Department says Raymond Sipel died at the scene of the collision around 10:45 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the taxi was headed southbound on Depot Road in Huntington when the 30-year-old Sipel ran eastbound across the road.

Cab driver Christian Lopez-Barcelo wasn’t injured but was taken to a hospital for treatment for stress-related symptoms. He’s been released.

The 31-year-old was arrested on a charge of driving on a suspended license and was released on an appearance ticket. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer, and no telephone number for him can immediately be found.

The taxi is undergoing a safety check.
