(PIX11)-- In a heartbreaking scene after a day of unimaginable pain, New York's Finest gave a somber salute to the two ambulances carrying their slain NYPD brothers outside Woodhull Hospital Saturday evening.

Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were killed senselessly by 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley outside of the Tompkins Houses in Brooklyn before 3 p.m. Saturday.

They were pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital, where hours later Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the cold-blooded double murder.

Police officers at the news conference turned their back on the mayor as he walked in, the most symbolic manifestation yet  of increasing tensions between cops and City Hall in the aftermath of the Eric Garner grand jury decision.
