MIDTOWN (PIX11) -- One day after a gunman with a vendetta against police took the lives of two NYPD officers in an execution style shooting, Mayor Bill de Blasio attended Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown.

The mass was given by Cardinal Timothy Dolan to a full house of worshippers and mourners. He called the murders of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos "brutal" and "irrational."

The Cardinal also stressed "solidarity with police officers" after the shooting, adding that it's hard to find hope in such a tragedy just days before Christmas.

Mayor de Blasio attended mass alongside his wife, Chirlane McCray, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton,  Chief of Department James O'Neill. He avoided news cameras and reporters calling his name as he left the cathedral.

Police officers comforted each other outside the cathedral while passersby stopped and thanked them for their service to the city.
