QUEENS (PIX11) -- A lot of us overspend at holiday time.
But Patricia Richards of Queens really overdid it. She paid JC Penney way more than she owed. Her bill was for $110.83.
Patricia says she pays off her bill every month.
But somehow she zoned out when she was writing checks. Because she sent Penney a check for $1,110.83!
And then came the battle to get her $900 overpayment back.
Suffice it to say that Patricia got a royal runaround from customer service and a bunch of other folks. It went on for weeks…until she’d finally had enough. Without her refund she was strapped for Christmas shopping money.
“So I said I’m gonna call Channel 11! I am calling Channel 11 ‘cause this is crazy!”
That was a smart move because we love crazy. Within reason, of course.
Anyway, we got on the phone and exchanged emails with Penney. We sent Patricia’s paperwork. It took about a week, but our contact managed to cut through the holiday red tape. Patricia went back to her nearby store and got her refund in cash.
She’s happy. We’re happy and we hope you’re happy.
Oh, by the way, you can’t entirely blame Penney for being so cautious. After all, identity theft is a huge problem these days and the store did need to be positive none of that was going on here.
