EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- A 9-month-old girl is hospitalized after police say her father accidentally shot her inside their Brooklyn home.

The young girl was shot in the hip Saturday afternoon at an apartment on Sutter Avenue in East New York.

Police tell PIX11 that officers were driving down Sutter Avenue around 4 p.m., when the mother ran out of the building and flagged them down.

The officers saw the baby was injured and escorted the family to Woodhull Hospital.

When police entered the apartment, they found an illegal, non-registered colt 45.

The 47-year-old father told police he was cleaning the gun when it accidentally discharged.

Neighbors on Sutter Avenue had mixed things to say about the couple being investigated for shooting the baby.

One woman, who didn't want to give her name told PIX11 said the father drank a lot.

"They were always happy with the baby," neighbor Anika Jones said. "I am shocked that they shot their baby and hurt behind it."

The baby was transferred to Bellevue Hospital where she is in stable condition.

Police interviewed both parents about the incident.

Only the father is expected to face charges.
