WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Police say an 81-year-old driver lost control of her car and crashed it on a Long Island road, killing her passenger and seriously injuring herself.
It happened around 5:15 p.m. Friday in West Hempstead. Nassau County police say the driver was leaving a drugstore and heading west on Eagle Avenue when the car went out of control.
Police say the car jumped a curb, veered back into the drugstore parking lot, hit two parked cars and crossed a road on the other side of the parking lot. Then it hit a tree and stopped.
The 87-year-old passenger, Henry Gugumuck, was pronounced dead at a hospital. He was from Malverne.
The driver is hospitalized in serious condition with head and neck injuries. Her name hasn’t been released.
