BROOKLYN (PIX11) — The NYPD has nabbed a suspected cop impersonator who is also accused of raping a woman in Brooklyn last month.
Authorities say Walter Barnes, 47, drove up to an 18-year-old woman walking near Gates Avenue and Broadway at about 6:30 a.m. Oct. 2 in Bushwick and offered to drive her to buy cigarettes.
Once inside the car, Barnes began speaking on a radio as if he was talking to a police officer and said he knew the officers inside an NYPD van they drove past.
Then, Barnes told the victim that if she did not perform a sexual act on him, she would be arrested. Barnes drove to the vicinity of Aberdeen Street and Bushwick Avenue, and the victim reluctantly complied, fearing she would be arrested.
According to police, Barnes then drove to Sherlock Street and Herkimer Street and attempted to undress the woman and force himself upon her. She attacked him and managed to escape the car and call for help.
Barnes was arrested on Wednesday, and has been charged with rape, aggravated sex abuse and criminal impersonation of a police officer.
