(PIX11) — The world could possibly be running out of chocolate.
Two of the largest chocolate companies, Mars, Inc. and Barry Callebaut, say the world is eating much more chocolate than is produced, Washington Post reported.
In 2013, the world ate approximately 70,000 metric tons more cocoa than was produced. The chocolate companies predict this number can reach 1 million in 2020 and 2 million by 2030.
Dry weather and a fungal disease in West Africa is also affecting chocolate production. The region produces 70 percent of the world’s cocoa.
But on top of that, the Washington Post reports chocolate is becoming an even more popular item in the world.
