SAN ANGELO, Texas (PIX11) — A loyal dog was found stowed away on an ambulance after his owner was rushed to the emergency room.

Texas paramedics had driven 20 miles when they were flagged down by another driver, who spotted Buddy, a 35-pound Beagle mix, riding on the ambulance’s side step, the Standard Times reported. They brought the dog inside to ride the rest of the way — it was a nearly hour-long drive in total — to the ER.

The owner, 85-year-old JR Nicholson, had rescued Buddy from a shelter four months ago. Nicholson, a rancher, had been experiencing dizziness and was released later in the day.

“I had two dogs (before Buddy), but I had to put one of them down,” Nicholson told the Standard Times. “He came along at just the right time.”

“He’s now a member of the family.”
