MANHATTAN (PIX11) — A Manhattan Assistant District Attorney has been charged with assault after he allegedly choked a woman at an Irish bar in Kips Bay, the New York Post reported, citing court papers.
On Nov. 1, 35-year-old Eli Cherkasky allegedly grabbed a woman by the arms, pushed her to the ground and used both hands to choke her around 2 a.m. at Failte on Second Avenue near 30th Street, according to the criminal complaint.
The altercation began when Cherkasky picked up the victim’s belongings without her permission, police said. He has been working for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office for eight years, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The 31-year-old victim was treated at a nearby hospital and “experienced substantial pain and a limited range of motion to her neck” along with “difficulty swallowing,” according to the complaint.
Cherkasky was arraigned in his own courthouse Friday night and was charged with misdemeanor assault, obstruction of breathing and menacing.He was released on his own recognizance.
The Bronx District Attorney’s office will handle the case to avoid conflict of interest.
