WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say an off-duty firefighter drunkenly drove the wrong way down a one-way street, slammed into another car and killed a woman delivering newspapers in suburban New York.

White Plains firefighter Erik Refvik was arrested on charges including criminally negligent homicide after the wreck early Monday.

He’s hospitalized and awaiting arraignment, and it’s not immediately clear whether he has a lawyer. An operational phone number for him couldn’t immediately be found. An email wasn’t immediately returned.

White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong says Refvik’s blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit when his SUV hit the other car.

Passenger Reyda LaMadrid was killed. Driver Edgar Lopez was seriously injured.

The Journal News says she was an independent contractor for its delivery firm, Publisher’s Circulation Fulfillment.
