EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Police officers shot a man in Brooklyn after they say he jumped into the backseat of an unmarked squad car and grabbed a sergeant's gun Sunday morning.

At around 12:45 a.m., the sergeants were at a red light at the intersection of Avenue D and Nostrand Avenue in East Flatbush when the 25-year-old suspect got into the car.

Police say a gunshot went off in the car, though it's unclear who fired the shot.

The suspect then grabbed the sergeant's gun and jumped out of the car.

Nearby police officers approached the man and told him to drop the gun.

The man then shot at the police, who returned fire striking him in the back and the leg.

He was taken to Kings County Hospital where he is in critical but stable condition.

None of the cops were injured in the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing with charges pending against the suspect.
