NEW YORK (PIX11) – Chelsea Handler is challenging Instagram’s prudish nipple ban for women by repeatedly posting a topless photo of herself atop a horse, a la Vladimir Putin.

Handler posted the screen grab on Twitter with the message, "Taking this down is sexist. I have every right to show I have a better body than Putin."

The comedian and former host of “Chelsea Lately” took to the far-more-libertarian Twitter to post a photo of herself topless, next to the Russian leader with the caption, “Taking this down is sexist.  I have every right to show I have a better body than Putin.”

Instagram pulled down the photo three times for not following community guidelines, despite Handler’s arguments for free speech and fair treatment for both sexes.

Handler responded, “If a man posts a photo of his nipples, it’s ok, but not a woman?  Are we in 1825?”

In the guidelines, Instagram offers the following advice for staying within its family-friendly rules, “If you wouldn’t show the photo or video you are thinking about uploading to a child, or your boss, or your parents, you probably shouldn’t share it on Instagram.”  Their policy, they assure users, is what allows them to stay in line with “our App Store’s rating for nudity and mature content.”

Handler is not the first to protest Instagram’s female nudity policy — Scout Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, walked around New York topless (where it’s legal to do so) after the social site deleted some of her photos.

But Instagram’s rules are not “family friendly”, they are prude friendly, so this article starts from a false premise. Ever wondered why children in the USA are nearly ten time more likely to become pregnant than their counterparts in say The Netherlands or the Nordic Countries? It is a similar picture for all the body-image and body-knowledge related indicators. Trace back the causes and it quickly becomes apparent that prudery is child abuse. Ignorance of the facts is not an excuse, the evidence is all there, it just needs big business to follow the evidence instead of assumed popular prejudice.
