St. Louis, MO (KTVI) — Cardinal Nation is in shock Monday morning after rising star Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident. It happened in the Dominican Republic, Taveras’ native country.

The memorial started Sunday night outside of Busch Stadium and is continuing to grow. There are hats, baseballs and many words of condolences after the tragic crash that killed the cardinals 22-year-old outfielder.

The deadly crash took place about 200 miles north of Santo Domingo. Authorities say Taveras lost control of the car and slid during a heavy rain.

The Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak issued a statement stating, “I simply can`t believe it. I first met Oscar when he was 16-years-old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

Taveras was considered the Cardinals best prospect since Albert Pujols.

In his first big league game this past May, he hit a home run against the Giants. The Cardinals signed taveras back in 2008 when he was just 16. He had a steady rise through the big leagues until that dazzling debut in May.

Although his bat cooled as the season went on, he hit a game tying pinch hit home run in game two of the NLCS against the Giants that helped the cardinals win their only game of that series.

Its so sad that authority has not taken action to protect such area were this accident have acure, it’s a sad day for the D.R. u.s.a. families and friends. Its not the first accident that havent happen at the same area or place, there were another accident at the same spot with another person and the person also was kill. I wish authorities take this seriously and take action to put some sort of guard road, to protect car from slamming into it and prevent casualties. Sad that the authorities here in D.R., don’t care a bit for the motor vehicle safety. I pray that he and his girl friend find a good resting place in haven, and may the Lord, provide peace and comfort to there love ones at such terrible loss. R.I.P. Oscar Tavarez 1992-2014.
