LUMBERTON, N.C. (PIX11) — A North Carolina grandfather is recovering after exchanging gunfire with three suspects who broke into his home and allegedly tried to rape his 19-year-old granddaughter, WGHP reported.
When officers arrived to Kenneth Byrd’s home in Lumberton on reports of a shooting, they found the 67-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Byrd’s wife, 65-year-old Judy Byrd, and their granddaughter were also at the home. The family told police that a man came to their door claiming to have car problems and needed water when two other men wearing black clothing, ski masks and gloves forced their way into the home and demanded money.
All three suspects were armed, officials said. When the men tried to rape the couple’s granddaughter, Kenneth Byrd grabbed a gun and fired at the suspects, the family told police.
Injured, the men fled in Byrd’s gold Cadillac. It is unclear if anything was stolen from the house.
Byrd was seriously injured in the exchange and was airlifted to a hospital.
Shortly after the home invasion, authorities were alerted when 28-year-old Brandon Carver and 17-year-old Jamar Hawkins arrived to McLeod Medical Center in Dillon, South Carolina with gunshot wounds. Authorities later found a third man, 20-year-old Jamie Lee Faison, dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside Byrd’s stolen vehicle.
