Driver killed while facing the wrong direction on Long Island road

Centereach, LONG ISLAND (PIX11) — A driver on Long Island was killed early Saturday after his vehicle was struck as he attempted to correct the direction he was going in.

Samir Patel, 51, was in a 2009 Ford van facing southbound on the northbound-facing shoulder of Nicolls road in Centerreach around 1:15 a.m. As he tried to turn the van around to drive in the right direction, he was struck by a 2004 Ford van entering Nicholls Road from Middle Country Road driven by David Greene.

Patel was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Oswaldo Borja, 64, of Holtsville, and Greene, 56, of Lake Grove, were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

The vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call theSixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
