LOS ANGELES, C.A. (PIX11) — Actress Elizabeth Peña died from complications due to alcohol abuse, TMZ first reported Wednesday.

According to Peña’s death certificate, which was obtained by the website, the actress experienced cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiogenic shock and cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol.

Peña also had acute gastrointestinal bleeding hours before her death, which caused her heart to stop, TMZ reported.

The 55-year-old actress died last Tuesday, October 14 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. It was previously reported that Peña died from natural causes following a brief illness.

Peña is famously known for her role in “La Bamba,” but recently made guest appearances on ABC’s “Modern Family” as Sofia Vergara’s mother.
