WASHINGTON, D.C. (PIX11/AP) — Millions of drivers are being warned to fix their airbags right away.

The warning issued Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration covers more than 4.7 million vehicles from multiple manufacturers that date to 2002.

Made by Takata Corp., inflators that deploy the airbags during a crash can rupture, sending metal fragments flying out. So far, automakers have recalled about 12 million vehicles worldwide because of the problem.

At least four people have been killed by the problem, safety advocates said. They estimate more than 20 million cars are equipped with the defective inflators in the U.S. alone.

Federal safety officials are urging owners of certain Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan and General Motors vehicles to act immediately. They can call their dealer to coordinate the fix.
