BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A 12-year-old girl who disappeared from a Brooklyn park and was feared to have been with an older man has been found safe, a community activist said Friday.

Janiah Simpson was last seen Sept. 28 leaving Wingate Park.

Her twin sister said the preteen left the park with a man in his 30s who approached her while she was playing with friends. It wasn’t known whether she left voluntarily.

Herbert credited Simpson’s safe return to the “relentless and unselfish” efforts by three city Sanitation Department workers, but did not give further details about how Simpson was found or where she’d been for the past several days.

Herbert also thanked local news outlets for their coverage of the girl’s disappearance.

Simpson’s family may speak publicly in the coming days, but for now they are spending time with their 12-year-old loved one, Herbert said.
