NEW YORK (PIX11) -- From superheroes to pint-size princesses, the Javits Center looked more like a live-action comic book Thursday with an endless cast of characters.

Day one of New York Comic Con was a monster right out of the gate, proving the notion: if you build it, they will come.

In nine years, attendance at the annual convention has exploded from 33,000 when it first started to an estimated 150,000 expected this year.

Making the first day in the Big Apple memorable was a surprise visit from one of the biggest stars on the planet – George Clooney.

The bombshell appearance brought fans to their feet as the Oscar winner sat in on a panel for his new sci-fi adventure ‘Tomorrowland’ which we finally got our first look at. (Watch the trailer below.)

While panel sessions kept the stars busy, fans were busy stocking up on merchandise and gamers were getting a good work out in.

New York Comic Con continues through Sunday and ticket holders could expect plenty more surprises as the weekend gets underway.
