BOONTON, N.J. (AP) – Police have reopened Interstate 287 in both directions in northern New Jersey after the State Police Arson and Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious item.

New Jersey State Police said investigators “inspected” the suspicious item and “gave OK to reopen.”

It was determined that the package was not suspicious after all, being a soft-case luggage containing stuffed animals and trash, police said.

The closing took place in Boonton.

State Police said there were major traffic delays, with residual delays expected as the roadway reopens.
