NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A high profile attorney known for his involvement in big police brutality cases is having legal troubles of his own.
Sanford Rubenstein has been accused of raping a woman inside his posh upper east side apartment after Al Sharpton’s 60th birthday bash on Wednesday night.
Both Rubenstein, who has worked with Sharpton on several cases, and his accuser, described as a top official at Sharpton’s National Action Network, attended the birthday celebration at the Four Seasons Restaurant.
“Sandy and I have become friends. But the young lady who made the accusation is a top official. Sandy has no official capacity with NAN. She does. And I respect her,” said Rev. Sharpton at the Javits Center where he spoke at the Circle of Sisters, the largest expo for women of color in the city. “So we’re like between the situation.”
The NYPD is reportedly investigating the accusation as a third degree rape. It suggests the victim was intoxicated and incapable of consent.
Rubenstein’s attorney, Michael Ross, released a statement saying: “Sanford Rubenstein vehemently denies any misconduct.”
The 70-year-old legal eagle represented the family of Sean Bell who was killed in a hail of police bullets outside a Queens club on his wedding day. He was involved in the Abner Louima case, the Haitian immigrant who was sodomized with a broom handle by cops inside a Brooklyn precinct.
He’s currently one of the attorneys representing the family of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who died after an officer put him into an apparent chokehold.
“It certainly will not affect us fighting the Garner case at all,” said Sharpton about the allegations Rubenstein is facing.
