UNIONTOWN, Ohio (PIX11) — A white woman is reportedly suing a Chicago sperm bank after mistakenly being inseminated with the sperm of an African-American donor.

Jennifer Cramblett and her same-sex partner Amanda Zinkon of Uniontown decided to start a family in 2011 and narrowed down donors at Midwest Sperm bank. The couple eventually decided on No. 380, a Caucasian man, and Cramblett became pregnant in December 2011, PIX11 affiliate FOX 8 reports.

The couple wanted to order more vials from the same donor, as they planned to have more children, and found out Cramblett was actually inseminated with sperm from donor No. 330, an African-Amercian man.

The lawsuit contends someone misread an “8” as a “3.”

Cramblett gave birth to Payton, “a beautiful, obviously mixed raced baby girl,” on August 21, 2012.

The couple says they are fearful of the experiences their daughter will have to face growing up in their “all-white community” and with their “often unconsciously insensitive family.”

“…[S]he lives in an all-white community in eastern Ohio. She did not encounter any African-American people until she entered college,” Cramblett’s lawyer, Thomas Intili, told NBC News. “Not all her friends and family members are racially sensitive.”

“She has bonded with the child and she loves Payton very much,” Intili added.

Handling the toddler’s hair is also proving difficult for the couple.

“Getting a young daughter’s hair cut is not particularly stressful for most mothers, but to Jennifer it is not a routine matter, because Payton has hair typical of an African American girl,” according to the lawsuit.

“To get a decent cut, Jennifer must travel to a black neighborhood, far from where she lives, where she is obviously different in appearance, and not overtly welcome.”

“They’ve made the one mistake a sperm bank can’t make,” the attorney said. “It’s not like she was ordering pizza.”

The couple is reportedly seeking over $50,000 in damages.

Sooo, you have an issue with how your daughter will have to adjust as a half African American, but no issue with how she will have to adjust living with two mothers? Completely ridiculous. I should add that I am a proponent of same sex marriage…. I think there is a double standard here. You fight to be accepted for your sexuality, but find it hard to fight for a race? I understand that an African American donor was not chosen, however, these women also did not choose to be born the way they were and yet they are embracing it, and standing up for it. Shame on them… If the argument was purely for the wrong donor I would agree. This is clearly not the case.

I think this is a selfish act upon this situation.
Yes, your right about not being able to get what you ask for!
      Hands down
But it’s the point of how you choose to feel and go about it
      After all
That child will have to grow up knowing she wasn’t what you wanted
And that right there alone is painful to know
As a child, I was taught to be happy with what I have, and thank god……
Even if it wasn’t something I wanted!
Now to see/read about a “lesbian” couple being mad that there child is half black???
      Lesbian couple!!!???
How you??? Out of all type of ppl in this world be mad!!!???
If your community is more ok with 2 woman being together opposing to 1 half black child walk around there…..?
Personally, I would consider moving asap

Nobody can argue with this… being biracial is nothing uncommon nowadays but just the fact that this child has 2 mothers she most likely may be stigmatized for that…

She has perfectly valid reasons for a lawsuit. The lab screwed up badly and violated its contract with her. People who get artificially inseminated or adopt have every moral right in the world to express their wishes as to the race, ethnicity, faith, etc. of the prospective donor. This is NOT prejudice or bigotry…it is prejudice to demand people relinquish their own human right to want their offspring to be like them.

I think news anchor should keep his opinion to himself, he reports news I don’t want his view on it, that’s a different show!

So what he or she is mixed race. It is not the end of the world. The child will grow up with more advantages than anyone else. My cousin is half Italian . In his household they eat pasta with broccoli rob, and sometimes with collards. His mom can make some wonderful ghetto dishes that combine Italian with classic soul food . Lol

The least of my worries would be about where I could get my childs hair done, that is just ridiculous! In this day and age bi racial familes are more accepted than they were years ago and so are their bircial children.. As I read this, i see that she got the sperm donated in 2011? Why is this just coming out now, in October 2014? I would think if this whole thing upset the parents this much they would have done something LONG before now….

  • gp

I agree with Bev Kimball. However, one of the mother’s stated she had bonded with the child. Obviously, still lacking what nature’s course does with most all biological mothers doesn’t seem to have occurred here. Maybe they should think of putting the child up for adoption now while the child is still very young. I would be willing to adopt her.

So what a biracial kid. It is healthy and a wonderful gift. I have a cousin that’s half Italian. Big deal. Its great . Their is a great benefit for my cousin he can claim minority status to get extra points on civil service exams and get ahead of everyone. Lol

To the mothers: feel free to email me back via this post (I am monitoring it), if you seriously want to consider adoption for the child, whom you obviously don’t want. It would be a bad situation for the child to have to grow up with knowing she was not wanted, and being ostracized by her “two mothers”, and their families, and then having to relate and adjust to the lesbian household. That is a lot for a little baby girl to have to deal with. I have raised two daughters of my own, in a loving family oriented household. And now have a beautiful 5 year old granddaughter who I am very close to. I am a young by heart & spirit grandmother, good health, very active and do not look nearly my years. Children need to be embraced by a God loving, wholesome household, including those who by their mother’s own admission, really wasn’t what they wanted.

“They have problem doing the child’s hair” WHY WOULD YOU EVEN PUT THAT ON A LAWSUIT?? Wow. I COMPLETELY understand that you didn’t get what you guys wanted, but really?? Some of the things on here seem kind of racist. But, whatever. It’s ironic that a lesbian couple is making these crazy claims. By the way, there’s plenty of info on the internet about taking care of biracial childrens hair. And what neighborhood do you guys live in?? What is it, 1942?????
