ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) - Attempted murder charges have been filed against a man who was shot by police after he allegedly stabbed an officer during a street confrontation.

Monmouth County prosecutors say 22-year-old Oswaldo Torres Quiroz, of Woodbridge, was also charged with attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer and weapons offenses stemming from Monday's incident in Asbury Park.

Prosecutors say Quiroz stabbed Patrolman Carl Christie in the abdomen with a steak knife, but the officer escaped serious injury because his protective vest stopped the blade.

Quiroz was then shot once by another officer when he allegedly tried to grab that officer's gun.

Quiroz underwent surgery for injuries that prosecutors say were "significant" but apparently not life-threatening.
