NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A grand jury will begin hearing the Eric Garner case in October.

Garner died of a chokehold on July 17 in Staten Island.

This video of the incident went viral, sparking outrage among the community and local officials.

District Attorney Daniel Donovan announced last month that he will convene a special grand jury to further examine it.

Authorities believe this proceeding will take at least a few weeks or even a month.

PBA President Pat Lynch is standing by the officers, saying Garner resisted arrest and the police followed proper procedures.
