HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A 25-year-old police officer who died just nine months into his service was laid to rest Thursday.

Michael Williams died Sunday morning when the police van he was riding in hit a concrete barrier on a Bronx expressway. Eight other officers being transported to their work assignments were hurt.

Williams’ funeral started at 11 a.m. at St. Kateri Tekekwitha Church in LaGrangevill. He was buried in Union Valley Cemetery in Mahopac in neighboring Putnam County.

A graduate from a Poughkeepsie-area high school, Williams worked as a part-time sheriff’s deputy before joining the NYPD earlier this year.
