NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter didn't want to leave.

The retiring captain gave New York one more win with a big hit, then took two trips out to shortstop, waving to the adoring crowd each time following his final home game at Yankee Stadium.

Soon after his game-winning single in the ninth inning sent the Yankees over Baltimore 6-5 Thursday night, Jeter said that he played his last game at the position. He said he would only serve as designated hitter in his final three games in Boston this weekend.

"I want to thank everyone here," Jeter said in a news conference shown on the center field video board, with many fans still in their seats. "I've said it time and time again ... Thank you guys."

Awesome Jeter, beautiful memories for me. I grew up in the Bronx. And Yankees have been my favorite team and of-course I am a hard die for the Yankees. I live in Baltimore since Dec of 2007 but never missed a game. and proudly wore my favorite Yankees shirts. And when you came to the team, got stuck with the number 2 shirt. My blessings to you and family. Thank you for the 20 yrs. you gave us the in the Bronx. New York.

And yes i will admit, part of my childhood ended last night with the final game at Yankee Stadium. Yes it was sad it was bittersweet but at the same time it didn’t surprise me that Jeter came through last night, almost like this game was a movie of some sorts. To me, it was like a perfect Hollywood ending. Yankee games will never be the same without him.
