BROOKLYN (PIX11) -- A Brooklyn elementary school science teacher has been arraigned on charges of sexually abusing 5 of his young female students.

Omil Carrasquillo, 36, is accused of molesting the girls, all between the ages of 9 and 11, at The Caton School PS 249 in Kensington.

“This is a tremendous breach of public trust. Schools should be safe havens for young children such as these school girls who were allegedly abused. Parents count on teachers to act as role models – and not to abuse their positions to sexually exploit children," said Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson.

Prosecutors say Carrasquillo abused the students on seven occasions on school grounds between October 21, 2013 and September 18, 2014.

Carrasquillo, who has been with the NYC Department of Education since 2006, was arrested Wednesday after one of the students came forward.

Carrasquillo has been charged with five counts of first-degree sexual abuse, five counts of second-degree sexual abuse and seven counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
