QUEENS (PIX11) -- A 20-year-old driver and his 19-year-old passenger are dead and a boy is in the hospital after their car collided with a light pole then a tree on the Belt Parkway, where police say the driver lost control while he tried to pass another car.

The wreck happened on westbound Belt Parkway near Rockaway Boulevard about 10:45 p.m.

Investigators said initial information suggests the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he swerved to pass another vehicle. He then tried to swerve back into the left lane and enter the entrance ramp to the westbound Belt Parkway, but lost control and hit a light pole then slammed into a tree.

The driver -- 20-year-old D'John Arias, of Corona -- died at the scene, police said.

A 19-year-old passenger -- identified as Karim Carter, of Jamaica -- was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, and a 14-year-old boy was taken to a hospital with injuries to his leg. The younger passenger was in stable condition Friday morning.

Officials said the pair was trapped inside the burning car for nearly 30 minutes before rescuers could pull them out.
