(PIX11/CNN) — A British man and woman were found dead on a popular resort island in Thailand, police said Monday.

The two victims were found on the island of Koh Tao, and police are investigating their deaths as murder, authorities said.  They were identified as 24-year-old David Miller and 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge, according to the BBC.

Their naked bodies were found with evidence of a violent attack.  Local police told the British news outlet they believed the attacker or attackers had used a garden hoe.

Boats were initially blocked from leaving the popular tourist destination, but service to and from the island has since resumed.

Miller and Witheridge met on the island, a prime destination for backpackers, authorities said.  They may have attended a party Sunday night which was held roughly 300 feet from where they were found, according to reports.

No suspect or motive for the killings has been identified.
