ALICANTE, Spain (PIX11) – A municipal gravedigger has been suspended after a photo of him posing with a propped-up, 23-year-old corpse was shared on social media.

The gravedigger, identified only as Clemente, ended up in the photo after a request by the man’s niece, according Spanish paper Informacion.  The body had been exhumed so the man could be buried with his wife, and when the lid of the coffin was removed family members were shocked to see the mummified body still very intact.

The niece snapped the picture while Clemente and a man identified as her husband, posed with the corpse inside the municipal cemetery.  She sent the image to a cousin using WhatsApp, and the cousin apparently passed it on to a sister-in-law and someone, somewhere along the way, shared it on social media.

She told the paper that she “never wanted to hurt or offend anyone,” but within two weeks most of her neighbors in the small town of Gaurdamar del Segura had seen the picture.

Unfortunately for Clemente, he was wearing his work uniform when the image was taken, complete with the town’s coat of arms.
