Police rushed to the Livingston Ave. home and located her brother, 33-year-old Joseph Kearns, nearby.

"Joseph Kearns was transported to the first precinct. He is going to be charged with murder 2nd degree and assault 1st degree," said Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer of the Suffolk County Homicide Squad.

Mina, believed to be his adoptive mother, died at the hospital. As for his sister Kathleen, she is expected to survive. However, her knife wounds could have easily resulted in death. "She has severe injuries to her head and face," said Detective Lt. Beyrer.

"He has not been arrested, no history of violent behavior at this time," Dectective Beyrer said of Kearns.

Joseph Kearns will be jailed overnight and faces arraignment Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
