MANHATTAN (PIX11) -- Fans of Joan Rivers gathered outside Mount Sinai Hospital and her Upper East Side apartment building Thursday after news of the star's death.

The comedienne died Thursday afternoon at Mount Sinai Hospital. She was surrounded by family and close friends at the time of her death.

"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon," daughter Melissa Rivers said in a statement.

Several fans remember Joan Rivers for her role in E! Online's Fashion Police, as well as her sometimes controversial sense of humor. Fans also say Rivers is a pioneer for women in the media and in comedy.

A funeral is scheduled for Sunday.
