DIX HILLS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed his car while going the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills early Sunday morning, police said.

James Reynolds of Amityville, N.Y., was initially driving a 2004 Honda Civic east on the LIE at around 5 a.m. when two Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol officers saw him enter the rest area located between Exits 51 and 52 and make a U-turn. Police said Reynolds then left the rest area and drove west on the eastbound side of the expressway, before losing control of his car and crashing into trees on the shoulder.

Reynolds, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and driving in the wrong direction. He is scheduled to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
