Woman struck and killed by taxi on Upper East Side

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A woman was killed when a taxi struck her as she tried to cross the street on the Upper East Side Friday afternoon.

Authorities say the 58-year-old woman was attempting to cross northbound on Madison Avenue at 79th Street just after 2 p.m. when the taxi made a left turn and struck her.

Witnesses say several bystanders lifted the taxi off of the woman.

She was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The NYPD is investigating.
