To Run or Not to Run

(PIX11) — Whether you’re running the New York City Marathon for the first time or you’re a regular competitor, there are some basic pros and cons to consider before you suit up in your new athletic gear and running shoes.

Let’s tackle the bad news first: according to medical experts, runners are prone to heatstrokes, allergic reactions, fractures, sprains, strains, foot blisters, dehydration, and sometimes cardiac arrests.

The good news is some of these occurrences such as dehydration and allergic reactions can be avoided with proper preparation.

Dehydration happens when the body loses too much water and it’s not replaced. The solution—drink plenty of water and on the day of the race sip (not gulp) water at the designated water stations. Keeping in mind that overhydration can increase the body’s sodium levels.

Allergies, often caused by pollen, can cause runners a great deal of discomfort the day of the marathon.  Medical experts suggest using nasal sprays or antihistamines up to two weeks in advance of the race to help prevent such allergic reactions.

Unfortunately, temperature increases, hidden medical conditions, and physical mishaps make the remaining aspects of a runner’s nightmare even more unpredictable.

Nevertheless, there is more good news than bad for marathon runners: medical professionals say there are lots of benefits of exercising regulary.

In preparation for a marathon, one’s lifestyle generally changes for the better.  Eating a healthy diet, exercising daily, eliminating smoking, getting the proper amount of rest, and drinking little or no alcohol become the norm.  Experts agree it almost certainly has a behavioural change that may have an impact life long.

Whether your goal is to become an avid runner or fulfill a once in a lifetime dream, the best advice is always get a second opinion—your doctor’s!
