PARAMUS, New Jersey (PIX11) - The Garden State Plaza mall was briefly evacuated Tuesday after fire broke out on the roof of a Macy's store.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze shortly after it began, but out of precaution they stayed at the scene for several hours after.

It's not known how many people were in the popular northern New Jersey mall when the blaze began.

It's just the latest in a string of unfortunate incidents for the shopping center, which was evacuated twice in November last year -- once after a 20-year-old fatally shot himself inside the mall, and a week later during a bomb scare.

In March, a car-tire explosion ignited panic among shoppers who mistook the sound for gunfire.

What caused the fire Tuesday is still not known.
