GRAND CONCOURSE, Bronx (PIX11) -- The death of a 20-month-old toddler has now been classified as a homicide by a medical examiner who performed the autopsy.

Police arrived to 1374 College Ave. in the Bronx around 2:20 p.m. Friday when they found Cardel J. Williamson lying on the bed and having difficulty breathing. The officers administered CPR on the toddler, and he was transported to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The child's caregiver, 40-year-old Athena Skeeter, has been charged with manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child.

Skeeter told police that she threw the boy to the floor and stepped on him three times, the Associated Press reported. She said she had been 'wrestling' with the toddler after his father dropped him off.

She is due back in court on Thursday. Information on an attorney for Skeeter was not available.
