Police: Newark shopkeeper abducted, killed in robbery

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- A Newark businessman was killed as he attempted to open his family store Friday morning.

Police say 26-year-old Jose Rivas was shot and killed in around 8 a.m., while opening Yesi Supermarket on Osborne Terrace.

Investigators say he was abducted and thrown into a car before being robbed and shot.

His body was found several blocks away from the store.

A Newark resident who knew Rivas described him as a nice guy.

"The man would take the shirt off his back and give it to you if you ain't have it," the witness said.

His murder is the 57th in Newark in 2014.
