FREEHOLD, N.J. (PIX11) – An ex-con is accused of murdering his cousin and her 10-year-old foster daughter after the woman walked in on him taking pornographic photos of the young girl.

Brian Farmer, 58, of Long Branch, was arrested Wednesday evening in connection with the deaths of his cousin Joan Colbert, 62, and her 10-year-old foster daughter Veronica Roach, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday.

The pair was found the afternoon of Aug. 1 in their home on Lippincott Avenue. They had been strangled to death, prosecutors said.

Investigators said Colbert walked in on her cousin allegedly taking lewd photos of her young daughter and a fight ensued. That confrontation ended with Farmer allegedly killing Colbert and the girl before fleeing the scene.

Detectives said they discovered sexual photos of the young victim on Farmer’s cellphone.

Released from East Jersey State Prison five years ago, Farmer spent 13 years in prison on charges including assault, aggravated sexual assault and arson.

Farmer faces two counts of first-degree murder, four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and charges of possessing of child pornography.

If convicted of both murder charges, Farmer faces life in prison without parole.

Possible sentences for the child endangerment charges range from 3 to 20 years, depending on the degree.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. His bail has been set at $2.5 million.
