Off-duty MTA officer accidentally shoots himself and 3-year-old son on Long Island

SMITHTOWN (PIX11) -- An off-duty MTA police officer accidentally discharged his weapon, injuring himself and his 3-year-old son, according to Suffolk County Police.

The shooting in the family's home in Smithtown happened just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The boy was taken to Stony Brook University hospital, where surgery was performed to remove the bullet.  His father was taken to the same hospital and both are listed in stable condition.

No names have been released.

Police say while they have determined that shooting is accidental, their investigation is continuing.
