The above emoji is one of the most popular among hundreds of the ubiquitous mobile-phone icons, but it seems people can’t agree on what it means.

Many people see praying hands; others insist it’s simply a high five. What we do know is that this particular emoji is popular — the image of two hands held together is the most tweeted emoji, according to a real-time emoji tracker.

NPR suggests that ultimately, the emoji’s meaning depends on cultural perception. For the Japanese, NPR says, the image communicates “sorry” or “thank you.”
