NEW YORK (PIX11) – Cancer survivors are working together in Queens to keep themselves and a local natural resource healthy.

Empire Dragon Boat Team is the city’s first dragon boat team comprised exclusively of cancer survivors.

With the motto “Spirit + Strength = Success,” the team paddles in unison in Flushing Bay, where they also work closely with the Riverkeepers and Water Alliance of New York to clean up the area.

They test the water weekly for bacteria count and has started an oyster garden to facilitate the process.

The team was formed in 2009 with just six members, and has grown to 35 – ranging in age from 30 to 71, all with varying degrees of fitness.

Empire Dragon is recruiting new members. For information on how your or a loved one can join the team, click here.
