MASSACHUSETTS (PIX11) — An axe flew off the back of a dump truck and nearly killed the passenger in the car behind them.

The Mass. State Police posted the crazy story to their Facebook page, saying they are “thankful this situation didn’t have a worse ending.”

Drivers were heading south on route 95 in Massachusetts around 11 a.m. Wednesday when a hatchet flew out of the truck in front of them.

The unsecured axe flew into the windshield, which protected the passenger from being hit.

The driver of the dump truck was given a $200 fine by a Massachusetts trooper for failing to secure his cargo.

The Mass. State Police reminded drivers in their post to secure their cargo, and to obey speed limits so situations like this don’t end in deadlier consequences.
