Newark officer shot while breaking up robbery

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A Newark police officer is hospitalized after he was shot and wounded while apprehending a suspect in an armed robbery.

Mayor Ras Baraka says the officer was shot in the leg during a struggle with the suspect Wednesday afternoon. Baraka says the officer’s wounds are not life-threatening.

The suspect was in custody Wednesday.

Neither the police officer nor the suspect has been identified.
