SAVANNAH, Georgia (PIX11) — When animal control officers found a pit bull mix, Jonie, carrying its injured chihuahua friend, Chachi,in its mouth, looking for help, they knew they stumbled upon two very special dogs.
According to the Savannah-Catham Police Department Facebook page, Jonie and Chachi were found wandering around a neighborhood last week. Chachi had a severely infected eye.
“And Jonie, a white lab-pit bull mix many times larger than Chachi, was walking around with Chachi in her mouth, carrying him from place to place, stopping occasionally to lick his swollen eye,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Clearly, Chachi appreciated the attention.”
Chachi’s eye had to be removed, and once he healed, he was reunited with his friend. “On Tuesday, Jonie finally was allowed to visit her old friend and shelter staff were treated to an emotional reunion of the two canine friends, complete with licking, whining, caressing and finally cuddling,” the department said of the pair’s reunion.
Now, officials are hoping the two will be adopted together.
“They are both such sweet animals. But the relationship they share just sets them apart,” said Animal Control Officer Christina Sutherin. “It would be wonderful if we could find a home that could take both of them. But that is not always possible.”
The shelter told the Huffington Post Jonie and Chachi only seem to care about each other, so they would be better suited to a home with no other dogs. “They truly appear to be soul mates,” Sutherin said.
