NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (AP) – A family’s three-legged dog was shot to death when a group of men tried to break into a home on Long Island.

It happened just after 3 p.m. Thursday on Montauk Highway near Doane Avenue in North Bellport.

Four to five men tried to break into the home, but four adult residents pushed the door back as the would-be burglars sprayed them with an unknown chemical, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

During the struggle, the dog raced outside. The 11-year-old, three-legged pit bull named Sarah shot with a small caliber handgun by one of the attackers before they all fled. Sarah died from her wound.

Nothing was taken and all of the attackers had their faces partially covered.

There have been no arrests.
