SEATTLE (PIX11) – A Seattle man paid dearly for his decision to opt for a lighter and spray paint instead of a rolled-up newspaper while trying to kill a spider Tuesday.

After spotting the arachnid on the wall of his Arbor Heights home, he decided fire would be his weapon of choice, and unleashed a blast of burning paint inside his laundry room, according to KOMO News.

The wall caught fire and spread to the rest of the home, according to the Seattle Fire Department.  After trying and failing to extinguish the blaze himself, the man, who wasn’t identified by authorities, fled the house and called 911.

By the time the fire was finally extinguished, it had caused $60,000 in damage to the rental home.

As KOMO observed, it’s unclear whether or not he succeeded in killing the spider.

Both the tenant and a woman he was living with are now seeking temporary housing with the help of the Red Cross.
