EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (PIX11) – A deadly crash on Route 3 in New Jersey snarled traffic Tuesday morning.

A tractor trailer struck and killed a pedestrian along the thoroughfare near Metlife Stadium. As of 7:30 a.m., just two eastbound lanes were open on Route 3. Traffic was backed up for miles, at least to Route 21.

Delays shortly after 8 a.m. were estimated to an hour long.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area. City-bound commuters can take Route 280 to the Holland Tunnel, head north to use the George Washington Bridge or take Route 120 to go through East Rutherford via side streets.

The driver of the tractor trailer stayed on the scene and an investigation is ongoing. It was not immediately clear why the victim was in the highway.
